Daily Motion, a video sharing website from France has accepted the news reports that one of its databases was hacked by cyber criminals leaking vital info of over 80 million users on October 20th this year. The leaked info includes usernames, email addresses and 18 varieties of encrypted passwords.
However, the technical team of the Paris-based company has said that the passwords are protected by a scrambled encryption algorithm and so the user accounts will remain inaccessible to hackers.
In response, Vivendi owned Dailymotion has advised its users that they should immediately change their passwords and should opt for the ones which are not that easy to guess. The company which allows users to upload, share and watch movies has insisted on passwords which are Alphanumeric and should possess at least 2 special characters along with a single upper case letter.
The company in its latest blog post of yesterday said that the potential security risk might have come from a hackers group outside France. The company did not specify any details about the hackers and said that it will reveal further details only after its security team concludes the investigation.
Dailymotion has also given a cautionary message to all its users saying that they should not use a password which is being used on multiple web platforms.
What’s surprising about the hack is the fact that it took place just a day before TalkTalk and Postoffice user credentials were hacked by some cyber crooks leaking info of over 157,000 accounts.
These days, data security has become a prime concern for most companies, irrespective of their size and business vertical they are operating in.
Backing up data, having a disaster recovery plan on hand, encrypting the data which is on and off premises are the best practices to be followed by public and private companies to attain utmost data security.
