Russia’s Federal Security Service disclosed that its nation is said to have repelled around 70 million cyber attacks endangering its critical IT Infrastructure in 2016. According to the security spokesperson Nikolay Murashov, half of the said numbers of cyber attacks were launched by state-sponsored actors.
Mr. Nikolay added that Russia has full potential to ward off the mounting number of Cyber Attacks now and in near future. He said that Russian Federation in recent times has worked a lot on protecting its critical infrastructure from unwanted attention from neighboring nations.
But Murashov feels that they are some Russian companies which still do not pay enough attention towards cyber attacks and cyber security. He added that these companies can act as loop-holes to people who are coming up with malicious intentions to ruin the dignity and power of Russia.
For this reason, to avoid any future untoward incidents, Russia is planning to bring in a new law which offers Intense Security for Critical Infrastructure in Russian Federation.
The drafted bill which is waiting for a formal backup from Russian Federal Committee is designed to ensure that all companies deemed to be a part of Russia’s Critical Infrastructure are equipped with all means to fight against cyber attacks.
The bill also includes a point to maintain a special register of all companies and agencies that are responsible for controlling objects of critical infrastructure. And as soon as the entities are on the list, they will be asked to purchase required software and hardware to detect and counterfeit cyber attacks.
State Duma’s Committee for Security and Information Policy of Russia is said to give an official nod to the drafted bill on Thursday this week. Thence, the move will pave way for its final passage by lawmakers.
If we keep aside the Russian plans to counter cyber attacks, all these revelations suggest only one thing. And that is, the Federal Nation is screeching to tell the world that it is also a victim of cyber attacks. But unlike its US counterpart, it doesn’t like to share all such info with the world.
