It’s Official now! According to the latest Kaspersky report, Russian hackers are said to be producing 75 percent of ransomware in the cyber world. This was revealed as a fact by Kaspersky’s senior malware analyst Anton Ivanov at the RSA Security Conference which was held in San Francisco, California on Monday.
While divulging some details about the report, Anton admitted that out of 67 dreaded Crypto ransomware families discovered in past one year, 47 percent of them were developed in Russia.
What’s makes this fact staggering is that the said percentage of ransomware developed by Russia has affected more than 1.4 million people around the globe in 2016.
The reason why ransomware has exploded in the last couple of years is due to the fact that it is now easy to buy or build a ransomware in the underground web. Most of the developers or sellers accept digital currencies like Bitcoins or Litecoins and are selling the malicious software.
Kaspersky Lab Telemetry which compiled the report says that 15 % of those developing ransomware in Russia are being funded by the Nation for obvious reasons.
This clearly concludes the fact that some of those who are developing ransomware in Russia are acting as per the actions of the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Very recently, United States National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has resigned following accusations that he shared some security secrets with Russian envoys. Intelligence agencies have also accused him of allowing Russian cyber army to spy on some documents, conversations, and emails of some political stalwarts of USA. This was all a part of a Russian campaign to tarnish the image of United States both politically and financially.
Therefore, with the latest from Kaspersky, we can easily come to a conclusion that Russia could have used ransomware to bring in a kind of political crisis in North America.
