Russia fancy bear launches a cyber attack on IAAF!

International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has claimed that Russia’s Fancy Bear launched a cyber attack on its database in the third week of September last year. The attack is believed to have compromised Athletes Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) applications stored on IAAF servers and the governing body has disclosed that details related to medical info of all athletes have been stolen.

IAAF President Seb Coe has apologized for the consequences of the attack and said that all athletes who applied for TUE since 2012 have been contacted by the sports association to inform about the latest on the attack.

Note- IAAF was founded in 1912 for fulfilling the need of a world governing authority for a competition program, or standardized technical equipment and for a list of official world records. The association acts as a world governing body for the sport of track and field athletics.

In a statement released on April 3rd, 2017, The International Association of Athletics Federation attributed the attack to the fancy bear group of Russia. The attack which compromised info of athletes Therapeutic Use Exemption and the data has been posted online by the fancy bear early this year. And our sources of Cybersecurity Insiders who got hold of the data say that US and British athletes make up a large proportion of those targeted.

Then in Feb ’17, IAAF said it contacted Context Information Security Company to undertake a technical investigation. The investigation report presented to IAAF revealed that fancy bear of Russia targeted IAAF, World Doping Agency and the US Democratic Party all at the same time and gained favorable results on a gradual note.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the cyber attack reports on the US and many international agencies are completely false. Speaking to a panel of media persons at the International Arctic Forum in Arkhangelsk, Putin added that all these media reports were being fabricated by enemy nations who are failing to prove their claims as true- sarcastically mentioning US 2016 Poll results.
