Japan to certify IoT devices based on their Cyber Attack Vulnerabilities

All these years, we witnessed electronic manufacturers offering appliances marked with energy consumption ratings. But Japan which is considered as an electronics hub to the whole world will soon be coming up with a new trend to certify ‘Internet of Things’ with a security certification.

Japan’s Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry plans to introduce a new security certification system for home appliances and other devices capable of connecting to the Internet.

Technically speaking, we can conclude that Tokyo is all set to certify “Internet of Things”  or IoT Devices based on their resiliency against cyber attacks.

As per our sources, Tokyo is all set to adopt this certification system by early 2018. Means all those appliances irrespective of their size and brand will have to get themselves certified with a resiliency certificate against cyber attacks.

It’s a known fact that the internet is slowly becoming a life blood to our daily lives. Meaning we are in such an age that we cannot live a day without IoT devices such as routers, smartphones, webcams, laptops, smart TVs, smart refrigerators, connected cars and building security control systems.

However, reports published by cyber security companies suggest that many of the above-said devices have shortcomings in terms of security. Hence, users who are using them are said to be extremely vulnerable to hackers.

It is also possible that such devices may act as hacking platforms to cybercriminals who can use these resources to attack government as well as corporate computer systems.

For this reason, Japan is all set to introduce a certification system to all IoT devices manufactured on its soil. This is to help users determine the safety of IoT devices based on the ratings they obtained from manufacturers.

Hope, the certification helps in curbing the cyber attacks on Internet of Things.
