From early this year, they have been multiple high profile incidents which said that AWS customers have inadvertently left data unprotected on S3 servers making it easy to access for hackers.
For instance, a well known hacking group was found accessing unprotected data of Accenture and Dow Jones from Amazon’s Simple Storage Service.
Obviously, such incidents will/ have created hostile conditions for those who were interested in migrating their digital assets to Amazon cloud environment.
Therefore after hearing from the media a series of such incidents saying that Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers left important data unprotected on the internet, the renowned company has finally reacted with a fix that could protect unprotected data of S3 customers’ from hackers.
Technically speaking, cloud security has to be practiced in two ways- one by the service provider and the other by the service seeker.
And so AWS can’t really be fully blamed for customers’ failure to protect their data using the existing tools.
AWS has rolled out a new cloud security feature that encrypts data of any file entering an S3 bucket. Thus, all the files stored on the said platform will be encrypted by default. The web services giant is also offering an automated alert system that will notify its customers if they make a configuration change leaving their stored data open to hackers.
Note- The service is readily available to all Simple Storage Service (S3) customers for free of cost.
