Latvia, a country located on the Baltic Sea between Lithuania and Estonia said that its new e-health system was on Tuesday afternoon cyber attacked with a sea of medical prescription requests pouring in per second. The cyber attack which can be termed as DDoS was launched in an automated way from more than 20 countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and the European Union.
As per the details available to our Cybersecurity Insiders, the hackers struck Latvia’s National Health System early Tuesday with fake web traffic. Sources from Latvian Health Department said that the attack was a distributed denial of service attack intended to make systems inaccessible for the Latvian populace.
Announcing the same on the public radio, Varis Teivans, the deputy-in-charge of Latvian IT security response service Cert.Iv, said that attack was intended to disrupt the e-health services which were launched by the country on January 1st, 2018.
Although the attack was not aimed to compromise personal data, it was a pre-planned attack launched to disrupt the digital health services of the country.
Aivars Lapins, the Latvian Health Ministry State Secretary said that all systems were shut down as soon as the attack was detected on the e-health system.
Mr. Lapins suspects two big countries behind the attack. But he failed to name them for obvious reasons hinting that a state-funded group from North Korea could be behind the attack.
Note- Latvia is one of the scenic countries located in Europe.
