Amazon Web Services acquires Cybersecurity Startup Sqrrl!

Amazon Web Services has made an official announcement that it has acquired Cybersecurity startup Sqrrl that was spun out by two former top-level executives of National Security Agency(NSA). The cloud services provider also confirmed that more such deals of purchasing businesses from US Intelligence Agencies will continue in near future.

In November 2017, Amazon Cloud Computing Service announced that it will start serving CIA and other communities related to US Intelligence with specially crafted data center infrastructure.

Later that month, Amazon announced the launch of AWS Secret Region which was in lines of AWS GovCloud launched in 2012. The Secret Region data center was meant to handle computing and data storage jobs specifically related to and serving government intelligence agencies.

As Sqrrl analyzes big data and helps in detecting cyber threats, it can help AWS to identify and address those threats related to US Intelligence cyber landscape in a faster way.

Word is out that Amazon purchased the Sqrrl company for $40 million. But the scribes of Cybersecurity Insiders are yet to get a confirmation on this issue.

From Monday this week, the homepage of the Sqrrl website says that it will be joining the family of Amazon Cloud Services soon. And Mark Terenzoni, the CEO of Sqrrl said that his company will continue to provide its customers advanced threat hunting capabilities even after the acquisition.

Note- Sqrrl Data, Inc is an American company founded in 2012. The said Cambridge, Massachusetts based company relies on the open source Apache Accumulo Technology- a highly scalable sorted, distributed key-value store based on Google’s BigTable.
