Snapchat users fall prey to Phishing Cyber Attack

Snapchat has confirmed that some of its users have fallen prey to a phishing attack which resulted in the exposure of credentials of thousands of its users on a public website. However, the image messaging service offering company has assured that it will rectify the flaw and will release an update to educate its users on how to stay safe from such phishing scams.

Cybersecurity Insiders has learned that more than 55,000 Snapchat users had their login details exposed to a clever online scam.

And it is said that the scam was brought to light by the tech site ‘The Verge’, tipped off by a government security official from Dorset, UK.

Note- Phishing attack is a kind of cyber attack variant that involves tricking users into giving up their private information.

In the Snapchat Phishing attack case, around 55,000 users were sent links that, when clicked, would take them to a fake login screen dubbed to be owned by Snapchat. And as soon as the user inputs the username and password of their Snapchat accounts onto the fake website, those logins will eventually be sent to hackers.

Snapchat is now encouraging users to use strong password topped with alphanumeric characters and wants them to enable login verification. It is also urging its users not to use third-party apps or plugins to access its services.

Since the messaging app has more than 187 million users on a global note; the breach seems to be fairly small.

Note- In recent times, the Snapchat app has evolved from just a picture sharing platform between individuals to a story featuring chronological content driver.
