TaskRabbit, an online marketplace which matches freelance labor with local demand has confirmed that its website and app were hit by a cyber attack last week and will be offline until the investigation gets over.
The company which provides handyman at work for jobs such as cleaning, moving, delivery and housekeeping said that it is working with a third party security firm to figure out what has happened, whose behind the incident and the level of impact.
With more than 1.75 million users on board (as of 2017), the firm is suggesting a precautionary measure of changing the passwords to all its users.
Although the company failed to specify on how many customers were affected, an anonymous source from the company said that more than 35% of users could have been impacted by the attack.
The kind of cyber attack and the level of its impact will be revealed shortly.
Note- In September 2017, IKEA Group announced that it is going to acquire TaskRabbit firm. According to the details available on Wikipedia, more than 70% of taskers on TaskRabbit are bachelor’s degree holders, 20% hold a masters degree and 5 % hold a Ph.D. In the year 2014, the San Francisco based company is said to have received only 4000 applications to be a ‘Tasker’. But in the year 2015, the numbers grew to 15,000. Currently, the firm’s services are available in 42 cities which include 5 metro cities.
