Germany on Thursday announced that it will impose new restrictions on ways Facebook collects data from users prevailing in the region. But within few hours of this announcement, the world leading social media giant said that it is going to reject the data protection policy of Germany and will appeal to the court by the same time next month.
As per the latest data policy formulated by Germany’s data watchdog, Facebook needs to take the consent of its users before it starts collecting data from then which includes those using WhatsApp and Instagram along with other 3rd party websites which embed Facebook account linking features.
Note 1- All these days, Facebook used to collect some personal details of its users (including what they post) without their consent from over 23 million active users in Germany.
But Facebook said in a recent statement that it is not to going to obey the laws imposed by Germany’s Federal Cartel Office(FCO) also called as ‘Bundeskartellamt’ as the collection is meant to protect users from terrorism, child exploitation and election interference.
Furthermore, Mark Zuckerberg’s company argues that what it has been doing all these days is in compliance with GDPR- designed to protect data privacy of online users.
Note 2- Bundeskartellamt argues that Facebook was indulging in ‘Exploitative abuse’ by collecting data of its users without their consent and this includes a collection of data on Facebook business subsidiaries Instagram and WhatsApp.
Note 3- Recently, Facebook CEO Mr. Zuckerberg announced that his company was planning to merge all the services of Instagram and Whatsapp into one unique platform i.e Facebook.
