The Wall Street Journal(WSG) reports that a hacking group from China has reportedly stolen Maritime research data from over 27 US Universities which includes the University of Hawaii, Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) and the University of Washington.
News is out that the hackers were specifically interested in siphoning data related to the use of artificial intelligence technology in Military research and development.
Cybersecurity Firm iDefense, a business unit of Accenture Security was the first to discover the details related to the cyber incident which was reported by WSG a week ago.
Highly placed sources say that the hacking group known with the names such as Temp. Periscope, Leviathan, and Mudcarp were the ones who were behind the cyberattack campaign which started in April 2017.
US-based Cybersecurity firm FireEye has corroborated the findings from iDefense and added that the threat was very much serious and so needs the attention of the Congress on an immediate note.
Cybersecurity Insiders has learned that the attack was conducted only on those universities which were receiving funds from few Chinese Corporates for reasons. However, the source failed to take the complete claim for the allegation saying it requires a lot of guts to come into open with valid evidence.
US Navy has reacted to the news by saying that it is working on ways to strengthen its defenses as it has completely understood the seriousness of the cyber attack.
From the past two years, countries like Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran have been tagged as the top adversaries of United States. And evidence provided by WSG seems to accentuate it.
