As governments around the world are getting immensely concerned about the probability of cyber threats hitting their critical infrastructure, Canada’s electronic spying agency has issued a cyber threat alert that its elections which are to be held in October this year might fall prey to cyber attacks.
The Communications Security Establishment (CSE) says that a high-tech cyber threat is gyrating on the heads of the Canadian voters as a digital foreign invasion is likely to influence the federal elections to be held in October this year.
“Digital Adversaries of Canada could try to polarize the social and political issues of Canadian voters by propagating fake news- similar to the one observed before/during 2016 US elections”, says Karina Gould, the minister for Democratic Institutions, Canada.
The 31-year old minister claims that the government is doing its best in putting a roadblock on the circulation of disinformation by devising stringent laws for the circulation of fake news on social media, digital media, and other resources.
Ms. Karina Gould did accept that there is a possibility of bringing more laws to keep a check on disinformation spread. But at the same time, she accepted the fact that new formulations might not happen before the October elections.
Speaking at the G7 summit last week, Chrystia Freeland, the Minister for Foreign affairs also said that there is a high possibility that foreign actors might meddle in Canada’s democratic process of elections- stressing on the fact that Russian interference is highly expected.
