South America power outage could have been caused by a Cyber Attack

South American populace hailing from Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay were left in darkness for several hours on Sunday and that might have been caused by a cyber attack.

But officials of electrical grids of the respective countries say that there is no authentic proof that the outage was caused by malware or other means of a cyber attack.

ā€œAt this moment we cannot rule out any possibilityā€¦.as anything can happen as per the current cyber landscapeā€, said Gustavo Lopetegui, Energy Secretary of Argentina.

ā€œMillions of people were left in darkness and still some regions were reigning under the incident pressure,ā€ says Mauricio Macri, President, Argentina.

The power blackout comes at the juncture when US President Donald Trump denied the reports published in The New York Times on Saturday claiming It infrastructure of Russian power grids were being spied by US Malware.

As per a source from Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, most of the countryā€™s power systems were working on a perfect note by Sunday night local time.

Edesur which happens to be a power utility in Buenos Air has released a public statement a couple of hours ago saying the generalized blackout was the first in the history of Argentina.

Note 1- The transmission system of Edesur supplies power to over 3 million customers and the power generation mainly takes place from Yacyreta Dam located on the edge of Parana River, Paraguay.

Note 2- Cybersecurity Insiders has learned that the power shut down was done due to a precautionary measure to restore the disrupted transport connection between the dam and the Salto Grande Power Station on Argentina Coast.

Note 3- As the said power grid was also powering the homes in Paraguay and Uruguay, residents based in Brazil and Chile were also affected by the power disruption.
