Sodinokibi Ransomware gang has again struck a town in Florida disrupting the digital services until a ransom is paid. The town in the discussion is Jupiter Town located in Pal Beach County and was assigned with the tag of 9th happiest seaside place in America by Coastal Living in 2012.
According to a news article in Palm Beach Post, the town was attacked by cybercriminals on March 21st, 2020 shutting down services related to utility billing, online payments, recreational programs, and emails.
Highly placed sources say that the town’s email services have been recovered and the other servers’ data is yet to be brought back to normalcy.
Authorities haven’t disclosed any details about the ransom and are disinterested in paying heed to the demands of the hackers.
Earlier in Dec’18, the Florida Town Jupiter was also hit by Nozelesn Ransomware attack locking down all internal drives from being accessed.
Note 1- Since April 12th, 2020 those spreading Sodinokibi ( REvil) Ransomware on Windows Machines have stopped accepting Bitcoins as ransom as the said digital currency is being easily traced by governments and law enforcement agencies. So, they are asking their victims to make the payment in Monero which can be currently treated as a highly secure and private mode of payment and is hard for the snooping eyes to detect.
Note 2- In the year 2019, renowned foreign exchange company Travelex was hit by ransomware where the hackers demanded $6 million in exchange for the decryption key. In April 2020, it was revealed that the servers of Travelex were infected by Sodinokibi, a malware which not only encrypts files but is now found to be stealing data to sell it online if the victim fails to pay the ransom.
