As per the document ‘Mobile Malware Evolution 2020’ document released by Kaspersky, the online banking services have become prime targets to those spreading Mobile Adware. And the threat report says that hackers are now focusing on improving the quality of adware, rather than raising their victimizing scope with mass attacks.
Among the most popular adware witnessed in 2020, Ewind followed by FakeAdBlocker remained as the leading malware families in the past year, followed by HiddenAd malware.
The success behind the spread of Ewind on a vast note has been credited to sophistication involved in the development of malware as it can be easily bundled into some legitimate applications such as games, music and video files.
What’s amazing about the research is that Apple iOS loaded devices remained most secure when compared to Android devices, although they failed to deter the threat actors from attacking them.
Increase in banking Trojans also suggests that the threat actors were completely focused on financial institutions last year, as most of the people were thronging the online banking services, as their physical visits were restricted because of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Kaspersky claims that the Android devices mostly those belonging to Chinese OEMs are coming pre-installed with adware and some even in the firmware components. Some researchers say that such attacks are often counted as supply chain attacks. But threat analysts who took part in the research say that some manufactures are indulging in spreading adware simply to receive extra profits.
