Many of the netizens woke up on Wednesday seeing their Facebook, WhatsApp, Amazon, and Instagram account inaccessible. Some thought that it was a temporary issue, while some stated that the account holding companies were down due to a cyber-attack from an adversary nation and the situation can only improve after a week.
But the real truth was that most of the websites like Upwork, Reddit, and Wikipedia were down due to a technical issue that emerged at the end of a Content Delivery Network (CDN) company named ‘Fastly’.
Fastly, issued a statement, late that evening, saying that the internet outage was caused due to settings change in its computing services and the outage will bounce back to normalcy by the end of the day.
According to the sources, the problem was solved by major online service providers by evening that day and so businesses such as ‘The Guardian’ and ‘New York Times’ were back to business by the early hours of Thursday i.e. June 10th,2021.
Fastly, has asked its team to submit a report on the cyber incident and issued an apology to all its customers. Also, it assured that such outages will surely be avoided by the company in future.
Note- Usually companies fail to identify such issues on time and correct it with a patch. But fastly’s IT team was well ahead on this note as they not only identified the bug on time but also issued a patch before customers could face intense losses.
