European Union has proposed a Joint Cyber Unit to defend its IT infrastructure against sophisticated cyber attacks and the knee-jerk reaction comes after witnessing the repercussions caused by Colonial Pipeline Cyber Attack in the United States a few weeks ago.
Every year, the number of incidents targeting Europe is rising on an exponential note and as most of the business operations went remote, the graph witnessed a surprising 114% surge in such attacks.
Hence, the EU wants to block such attacks in the future and so is interested in setting up a team of multi-national cyber experts who can assist in technically dealing with and neutralizing the effects of such attacks.
As the attack on the US Fuel Supplier was a nightmare, European Commission’s Vice President Margaritis Schinas wants to launch a Joint Cyber Unit that has the potential to deal with any such nightmare with ease.
Highly placed sources say that the cyber unit will be working closely with the newly formed Ransomware Task Force of United States by sharing intelligence and taking measures to nip such threats from the roots- like how the FBI led the way in shutting down the doors of DarkSide Ransomware Group.
Note- From the past few years, hackers hailing from nations such as Russia and China are seen targeting business units operating in the west on an exclusive note. And so, the Biden Administration put forward a proposal before Putin to help its law enforcement nab the cyber crooks who were found making millions by launching phishing attacks leading to ransomware infections.
