Amazon acquires Encrypted Communication App Wickr

Amazon Web Services, a business unit of Amazon Cloud, has made it official that it is going to acquire Wickr that offers encrypted communication certified by National Security Agency. The financial details of the deal are yet to be known. But the deal is likely to complete by October 2021, provided all terms and conditions comply with the SEC stipulations.

Wickr is a messaging app that offers secure mode of communication to governments, military groups and enterprises. And Amazon wants to use the technology to venture into the business of encrypted video conferencing and messaging that can easily win the trust of online users.

Security analysts state Wickr offers advanced security features that aren’t available with traditional communication services like WhatsApp and Telegram. So, Amazon Web Services wants to use the newly gained tech to provide a product that can easily attract the conscious of governments and enterprises.

In recent times, the COVID-19 driven Pandemic lockdowns have initiated many companies to take up business operations with remote workforce. And so the demand for virtual meeting and messaging apps has grown profusely.

As Wickr offers products that compete with Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Slacks, acquiring it will prove fruitful for Amazon in coming months.

BTW, AWS already has a similar service dubbed Chime in its radar that offers meeting, chatting, and business calling service to enterprise clients. However, as it received a very little traction, the next plan of the cloud giant will be to either develop Chime with the tech acquired from Wickr or offer another app that offer secure communication to Government organizations and enterprises.
