Ransomware Attack on Corona Virus Italian Vaccination Registration System

A Cyber Attack has reportedly disrupted the Corona Virus vaccine registration system from morning hours of today and authorities are clueless on when the digital vaccine registration system will be working normally.

Going deep into the details, the population living in Lazio Region, including some from Rome were badly affected by the attack that is suspected to be a Ransomware variant.

And because of this digital attack, the residents belonging to Lazio are not in a position to book any appointments for coming days or weeks to come.

Nicola Zingaretti, the President of the Region, acknowledged the news via Facebook as true, but failed to endorse it as a ransomware attack as the probe is still going on. He stated that the entire network access was pulled down and most of the data systems remain inaccessible.

Allan Liska, a senior security researcher working for Recorded Future, stated that the attack tactics match the scale of ransomware attack and so data recovery might take some time.

Note 1- Until March 2021, the Vaccination campaign and registration were been managed by the Ministry of Health and the special commissioner Domenico Arcuri. However, from the past two months Army General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo is managing the mass vaccination event that might lead to mass immunization campaign organized by the Italian Government to contain the spread of COVID-19 Pandemic in European Union.

Note 2- By mid-July this year, Italy vaccinated over 60 million people in its region, out of which over 25 million people are fully vaccinated, i.e. received their double dose.
