In the third week of August this year, UK’s Ministry of Defense posted an advertisement for a role to be filled by a SAS hacker who will earn £33,000 a year and will work for the secretive Computer Network Operations Exploitation Unit.
Basically, such Ad postings are made secretly and through freelance platforms. But UK’s Defense Ministry went a step ahead by publishing the job offering on various public media channels.
The ad posting was as follows- Based in Hereford, the requirement is for an extraordinarily talented electronics engineer to work along scientists and engineers to deliver solutions to the military and specialized military forces.
For a couple of hours the advertisement also reflected on the website of MoD terming the job vacancy requirement to MAB5- a special forces unit that is into hacking of SAS software aka Statistical Analysis System software used by businesses to analyze data.
As soon as a researcher named Alan Turnbull discovered the job posting and alerted the world that UK Military was looking for a SAS Hacker, the MoD received a flood of calls related to the job filling process and requirements.
Cybersecurity Insiders later learnt that the job designation indeed existed at the MOD and was a 37 hour per week job and would provide rapid tech solutions to soldiers related to various units, through a team led by Lieutenant Colonel.
Those recruited will be trained at the Pontrilas Base in Herefordshire where officers related to MAB5 unit received gun training at the 200 yard firing range dug inside a hillside, and a Boeing 747 to practice hijacking based crisis situations.
