A Distributed Denial of Service attack shortly known as DDoS resulted in the disruption of internet services across New Zealand leading to shut down or temporary closure of businesses from afternoon today, i.e. September 3rd,2021.
Reports are in that Internet Service provider Vocus, which operates Flip, Stuff Fibre, Slingshot and Orcon was targeted by a hacking gang with the prime objective to disrupt the services for days.
But all thanks to the business continuity plan of Vocus that helped it recover within 38 minutes of cyber attack, with affected users coming from places such as North Island, including Hamilton, Wellington and Auckland and also some parts of Great Barrier Island.
To those who are unaware of what is a DDoS attack, here’s a bit of explanation. A Distributed denial of service attack, also known as denial of service attack, is an internet activity where hackers try to disrupt a server by bombarding it with overwhelming fake traffic, thus disrupting the operations of the server and its capabilities to serve normal web traffic.
Coming back to the internet disruption in New Zealand because of cyber attack the digital interruption took place when most of the public in northern NZ were observing a Delta Variant related Corona Virus lock down.
Therefore, at this moment the public relies more on the internet services not only to connect with their colleagues and friends. But also to keep themselves entertain with their favorite content.
So, hacker/s who are suspected to be funded by some government intelligence were in an intention to shut down the web services to almost half of NZ.
However, their purpose was neutralized by the IT staff of Vocus, who not only recovered from the incident quickly but also prevented any untoward incident from happening due to web discontinuity.
