UK data watchdog wants to tackle cookie pop ups to protect personal data

Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office(ICO) is asking tech companies to tackle issues related to data privacy for cookie pop-ups. ICO is also intending to put forward a request to G7 Summit authorities and will urge them to present a plan to improve the current cookie consent functionality that is in place.

In a virtual meeting to be held in this week, Elizabeth Denham the Information Commissioner will present a vision for the web browsers, software applications and device settings to operate in the future.

As a part of this request, web browsers will be asked to offer a functionality where an online user can accept all cookies with a single click, instead of accepting a parade of pop-up messages for each individual website.

Already, the cookies acceptance feature has been part of EU’s General Data Protection Regulation that came into effect in May 2018.

However, after Brexit, the law needs to be tweaked a bit in order to get a wholesome cooperation on information sharing from companies operating in companies like US.

By doing so, ICO wants to aim for a unified data protection for all web users in European Union.

It can also help in curbing companies like Google and Facebook on their regular practices of data collection and sale of information to ad firms.

Note- GDPR allows web users to export their data and delete it as per their choice. At the same time, it also makes it mandatory for companies to report data breaches within 72 hours of their occurrence.
