Japan -based camera and binocular manufacturer Olympus that is also into the manufacturing of medical devices has revealed in an official statement that its servers were targeted by BlackMatter Ransomware group that could have disrupted the computers systems in network operating in Middle East, Europe and Africa.
Good news is that the team of forensic experts of Olympus Camera contained the malware spread by shutting down the infected computers. And the bad news is that few of the servers severely affected, making the staff to suspend any data transfers and backups to maintain data continuity.
Cybersecurity Insiders has learnt that Olympus was targeted by the file encrypting malware on September 8th, 2021 and BlackMatter Ransomware group posted a message that the network has been encrypted and the ransom related negotiations should further take place only through TOR Browser.
Black Matter has a history of targeting companies operating in United States and that too only those which are into the industry of manufacturing, software and those into mining industries that can shell out over $100,000 as ransom.
The said ransomware group has also taken a pledge that they will never launch cyber attacks on firms operating in healthcare, oil and gas and defense industries along with water utilities and non-profit organizations.
Security firm Emsisoft says that the cyber criminal group has been active since 2019 and could have launched attacks on over 46 organizations so far.
Thus, Olympus that is in the manufacturing of optical equipment has become the latest victim.
