CMA CGM, a France-based shipping and transportation company, has officially admitted that it was hit by a cyber attack that led to the leak of sensitive information such as first and last names, employee name, designation of employee, email address and phone number.
The good news is that the company’s IT staff was fast enough to install security patches and contain the breach and issued a public apology for the incident.
Cybersecurity Insiders has learnt that the company could have become of a victim to a ransomware attack and the hacking group behind it is demanding an exorbitant amount as ransom for not selling the data on the dark web.
What’s more interesting about the attack is that it occurred within a span of just 12 months as in last September the same company was targeted by those spreading Ragnar Locker ransomware that infected most of the company’s windows operating systems.
In another incident related directly to ransomware spread, New Cooperative, an IOWA based farm service provider, is reported to have been targeted by Blackmatter ransomware group that is demanding $5.9 million to offer a decryption key.
Blackmatter ransomware group has offered a deadline of September 25th,2021 for the farm services provider and if they cannot pay them, then they are ready to release the 1000GB data that was stolen from the database before it was decrypted.
What’s concerning about the latest ransomware attack on the New Cooperative is that the hackers somehow got access to the database that was also storing the company’s new innovation called ‘Soil Map’ along with some other information related to R&D and some employee data.
