European Union(EU) has made it mandatory for domain hosting companies to keep a record of all the info related to domain owners to speed-up security and to curb piracy online. The move is said to assist law enforcement agencies in tracking down any domain owners who indulge in launching website based malicious attacks, transacting money on an illegal note, host or propagate false information or store or sell stolen financial or classical data- a move that can help remove online anonymity to a certain extent forever.
Related authorities have already included the same in the NIS2 legislation that is being reviewed by European Parliament. So, a valid email address, telephone number, physical address details and a government issued identity will be made compulsory for those thinking to register for a domain.
So, pretty soon, a favorable law can come into effect would cut down fakes who give false contact info to domain registrars.
Technically , the law will be similar to that of the KYC that is being collected by many noted banks. A Know Your Customer (KYC) form makes it mandatory for the bank service users to disclose their accurate identity and maintain transparency regarding the money transactions they make.
Similarly, from now on, domain service providers will first seek accurate details of all those registering for a domain, verify them and then allot them a domain. This not only helps them know their users but also helps the law enforcement to track down online criminals on an easy note.
Will the same apply to those who have already registered?
Probably yes, as EU plans to implement the legislative move to all those seeking online services.
Will TOR and other such browser/websites be banned from operations?
Most probably ‘no’ as those developing and maintaining such websites and browsers will choose to block their services in EU, rather than abiding the law and putting a dent to their primary aim of doing business.
So, what will happen to those who register their domains outside EU for Opacity?
