TikTok, that was developed by Chinese firm ByteDance has topped the list of most popular and downloaded apps worldwide in this year with over 57 million installs.
And Douyin, a successor to the above stated Chinese short video app is also tagged as a global hit, as it has found a second place in the list with over 55.8 million downloads, followed by Instagram, a non-gaming app that has been downloaded over 54 million times between October 2020- September 2021.
According to a report of Senor Tower, Instagram installs were mostly done in India and Brazil in the past year. While Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Telegram finding place in the top 5 most installed application list.
In another report compiled by Appthority, the following 10 android apps were blacklisted by most companies last year- Poot-debug(W100).apk, AndroidSystemTheme, Where’s My Droid, Weather, Wild Crocodile, Star War, Boyfriend Tracker, Girlfriend Tracker, spouse tracking apps with various names, Chicken Puzzle and Device Alive.
On the iOS side, the apps that were blacklisted the most were WhatsApp Messenger, Pokemon Go, WinZip Utilities, CamScanner Productivity, Plex, WeChat, Facebook Messenger, eBay Kleinanzeigen, Netease News, Device Alive
Reason Apple Inc choose to blacklist the apps was because these apps where found tracking the location of the user, accessing contacts, accessing messages and camera app on the downloaded user’s device without permission and because of the data privacy concerns.
Note- Most of the blacklisted apps by companies are quite popular on the internet. But businesses banned them to keep a control on the flow of data to & from BYOD devices connected to the company networks and used by WFH employees.
