US orders for cybersecurity breach reports from railroads and airlines

The Transportation Security Administration of United States has asked all agencies involved in public transportation to submit a report by March 2022 about any cybersecurity breaches that took place in recent months. Thus, airport operators, rail operators and those involved in road transport should submit a report on the Cybersecurity incidents that took place in recent months.

Also, any breaches that take place in the transport departments should report the security incidents to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agencies within 24 hours of detection.

The transport security department of United States has urged all passenger and freight operators to bolster their cybersecurity posture within 9 months and this includes keeping an audit record of vulnerabilities and susceptibilities that might trouble them in near future and ways to overcome them.

Based on the analysis and reporting, the government of United States under the leadership of President Joe Biden is planning to assist these federal government agencies with funding and technical expertise that could help them in mitigating cyber attacks of any range in the future.

In the last 12 months, they were many instances when hackers were seen targeting rail sector. Like the breach of computer systems in New York Metropolitan Transportation Department and Michigan’s Transport department along with the ransomware attack on Toronto’s Transit Agency.

Hence, the new mandatory is said to help the transportation sector of United States protect its IT infrastructure from evolving cyber threats.
