Russia has made it formal that it has arrested few members of REvil ransomware group and seized their assets. Highly placed sources say that the arrests were made by Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) in coordination with a special team appointed by the Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
Reports are in that the law enforcement seized control of some core IT infrastructure of the Revil gang from Moscow, Petersburg and Lipetsk and have placed the gang members in prison.
On the condition of anonymity, a cop from the FSB reported the authorities seized huge amounts of cryptocurrency, vehicles purchased from crime and some servers that are suspected to be involved in spreading malware and launching DdoS attacks on some companies’ infrastructure operating in the west.
Cybersecurity Insiders has learnt that the arrest of 14 members could disrupt the activities of the notorious cyber crime group to a large extent because of which the spread of the REvil ransomware could halt on a temporary or permanent note.
What’s interesting in the arrests was that the activity took place when Ukraine made an official announcement last week saying that all of its government websites were digitally disrupted because of a cyber attack from the neighboring nation, i.e. Russian Federation.
In July 2021, Mr. Putin assured US President Joe Biden that his government will step in when the activities of hackers operating from his nation get well above the saturation point. And the latest arrests seem to justify the statement to the core. But why nurture or nourish such crime in first place….isn’t it?
