As people are eagerly searching for Russia Ukraine War news, security experts say that the trend might lead to more online users falling prey to cyber frauds. Researchers from BitDefender Labs made the prediction as it is witnessing a surge in cyberattacks launched through phishing emails meant to steal credentials, screenshots, keystrokes, and money from bank accounts.
Since March 1st,2022, BitDefender analyzed from its information resources that cybercriminals are sending emails to innocent web victims by lacing them with malware such as Agent Tesla and Remcos.
It is estimated that hackers sent over 200,000 million emails with charitable subject lines and intentions. And all those emails were seeking financial help from their victims with malicious links meant to push them to phishing frauds.
The emails were sent from IP Addresses based in the Netherlands and intended to target western countries such as Germany, Ireland, Hungary, the UK, Sweden, Australia, and the Czech Republic- just to capitalize on the sympathy wave circulating across the world on Ukrainians.
So, all you internet users having a genuine interest in lending a helping hand to the refugees fleeing from Ukraine. Please ensure that you are donating the money to genuine organizations that really indulge in social service. And make the payment online without revealing your OTPs, CVVs, Card Numbers to third parties by email or phone. And mind you, never click on banners displayed on websites that you often visit, as who knows, they can also be a part of a cyber fraud campaign.
