Hackers launched a Distributed Denial of Service(DDoS) cyber attack on Ukraine’s postal department disrupting the online parcel tracking service from past two days. Authorities report that the attack started on early Monday and ended shortly after 18:00 local time on Tuesday.
Sources from Ukrposhta report that the attack took place in two installments. One on Monday this week and then the next on Tuesday.
Confirming this news was today’s Facebook post of Ukrposhta which says that the DDOS attack took place for two days. And hackers succeeded in disrupting the postal website for almost 38 hours.
Postal authorities of Ukraine, however, denied the media reports which said that some critical data was compromised in this attack after hackers succeeded in gaining access to the central database through the parcel tracking system.
A spokesperson from the postal department confirmed the report that the postal department’s website was a victim of a DDoS attack and not a victim of malware attack as reported in a national newspaper.
NOTE- A Distributed Denial of Service(DDoS) Attack is an attempt to make a website or web service unavailable to its users by overwhelming it with fake traffic from multiple sources.
Ukraine’s security council said that it is aware of the attack on Ukrposhta’s website and the law enforcement has been pressed into service to find out who’s behind the attack.
Oleksandr Turchynov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Counsel said that this could be the work of a foreign nation. However, he never mentioned the name of Russia in his statement.
Cybersecurity Insiders readers have to notify that the relationship between Kiev and Kremlin deteriorated from 2014 following Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and its support to Pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine.
As a result of this political strain, Ukraine thinks that Russia is inflicting pain in its political system and national integrity by launching cyber attacks.
