Manufacturing sector Operational Technology is vulnerable to Cyber Attacks

A recent research conducted by TrapX Security in collaboration with Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) says that most of the operational technology (OT) used in the manufacturing sector is vulnerable to cyber attacks. And that’s due to the fact that most companies are using the same security tools to protect their Operational technology that is also being used to safeguard their IT environments.

When over 150 cyber and IT professionals were involved in evaluating their in-house security strategies and controls in manufacturing field, the above said details came into light.

The research also claims that the security teams in manufacturing sector are not in a position to tackle the increasing number of security alerts that are hitting their operational infrastructure as they lack proper tools such as right level of visibility and threat intelligence analysis to do so.

TrapX Security research conducted in association with ESG states that only 41% of organizations have a dedicated security team to secure their operational technology. While 32% of them rely on their IT teams to defend their OT platforms against cyber threats. So, these stats clearly suggest that companies operating in manufacturing sector are left with teams that are unprepared or under-prepared for attacks.

“So, the research clearly states us the fact that manufacturing organizations are experiencing real challenges for threat detection and response to their OT platforms, said Ori Bach, CEO of TrapX Security.

But the good news is that more and more manufacturing companies are getting ready to invest solutions that protect their IT and OT technology, helping them to accomplish more agile business processes…..hope so!

Note- The difference between Operational Technology(OT) and IT is that OT stands for the machinery, physical plant equipment, remote industrial software, SCADA software, systems needed for monitoring and controlling. While IT stands for web-based deployments, communication technologies, experts in networking technologies, cloud infra, SQL and JAVA based tools and experts handling the tech.
