Facebook is back in Google news trends and that is for another data expose of over 267 million Facebook Ids, names, and phone numbers- mainly Americans.
Cybersecurity firm Comparitech has discovered in its research that an unsecured database was holding data of more than 267 million Facebook(FB) users- out of which 180m were of Americans.
Security researcher Bob Diachenko who led the team disclosed that the unsecured database was left exposed to hackers from the past two weeks and thus some hackers accessed the info and sold the data on the dark web to make money out of brilliance.
FB has taken note of the data to expose and has taken measures to secure data hereafter. But its technical staff belief that the damage has been done and the accessed information could be used for spam messages or phishing scams.
Bob Diachenko who hails from Vietnam said that the hackers could have used master bots to copy the info to their servers or could have scrapped the data from Facebook’s developer API to launch cyberattacks in near future.
Paul Bischoff of Comparitech confirmed that the database was left exposed since last month and was identified on December 4th,2019 and the hackers shared the data on a public forum on December 12th,2019.
Facebook is hitting news headlines on a consistent note from the past two years, especially after its political data scandal of Cambridge Analytica got exposed in April 2018.
What’s interesting in this saga is that Mark Zuckerberg’s company always assures of taking appropriate security measures in safeguarding its user info against hackers. But fails awfully in doing so in practical…..isn’t it?
